Nits and lice are a common problem among little ones. But you cannot punish them to stay away from their best buddies just because the buddies are infected with nits. Here are some tips on getting rid of nits.

You need to understand that lice and nits are two different things. Lice are full - fledged creatures while nits are its eggs. Some people even get confused with nits and dandruff. Lice are known to infest scalp. Their most common targets are the school going children. It is with these children that they spread with direct contact.

Nits on the other hand are laid by lice and lay dormant on the scalp for weeks. After some weeks nits hatch. This is how lice keep coming back. Hence only killing the lice is not an answer to the problem. You need to be killing the lice and getting rid of nits at the same time.

You need to grab hold of fine - toothed comb. There are many such combs available which are designed specifically for getting rid of nits. It would not be possible getting rid of nits with the unavailability of a nit comb. Wash the scalp of the infected person thoroughly. Choose a room with good light so that you would be able to pick on the tiniest of the nits.

Since nits are not dandruff, they cannot come away when pulled with a comb. They stick to the hair so firmly that you need to be a little harsh when pulling them out. Hence if you wash the hair of the infected person it will loosen up the grip and allow you to comb more smoothly. Make the person sit on a firm chair. Then cover the shoulder or the neck with a clean white or light colored cloth or towel. This would prevent you from spreading nits somewhere else.

Separate out the hair in various sections and clip them. If the hair is thick there might arise a need to segregate them in more sections. Start combing section by section. Nicely wipe out the lice. Every time you comb hair there is a need to swab the comb. You can make use of a separate towel which would be vinegar soaked. This would ensure that the comb is clean every time you return to your section. If you find a living lice pick them and kill instantly. Even if you find no lice, you need to be getting rid of nits as they would be soon growing to be adult lice.

Once you are done with the combing, make sure you wash the towels, clips and combs you used for getting rid of nits. You need to follow this procedure almost every day for few weeks until and unless you feel that you have got rid of nits. It would be advisable to make use of shampoos and conditioners which are meant for getting rid of nits and lice. Make sure you wash the hair in sink or basin. Limit the use of shampoo to scalp.

When a single member of the family is infected with nits it would be better if all the family members check their hair for nits and lice. In case the scalp of your child is bleeding or sore, it would be advisable to get is checked by a doctor or physician.
